LIGHTNING ACE: Capt. Ralph C. Bills, 23 year old executive officer of a fighter squadron and veteran of a year of service with Lightning's in the Southwest Pacific, led his squadron on the fighter sweep which paved the way for the attack bombers striking Simpson Harbor.

CAPT. DANIEL ROBERTS, commander of a fighter squadron, led his group to the Rabaul attack. Captain Roberts returned safely from that mission only to be killed in combat over Finschafen a week later. Twenty-four years of age, he was officially credited with the destruction of 15 enemy warplanes. That score was established in only 11 weeks of action.
